Black Friday is one of the most anticipated dates of the year, but also a fertile ground for impulsive decisions and later regrets. According to psychotherapist Daniele Caetano, founder of Caminhos da Terapia and Mentoria Bem Me Quero, the secret to not falling into traps is to understand that excessive consumption is often linked to emotional aspects.

“Impulse buying is usually an attempt to fill a momentary void or alleviate uncomfortable emotions, such as anxiety, frustration and loneliness. When we don’t look at these feelings, we end up using consumption as an escape valve”, he explains.

1. Make a list of what you really need

Before leaving by clicking adsreflect on what is really necessary. “This helps the brain to have a rational direction and reduces the chance of acting automatically when faced with a tempting offer”, says Daniele Caetano.

2. Wait a few hours before purchasing

If you see something you like, add it to your cart and wait. “This waiting time helps the urge to decrease. Once the moment of euphoria has passed, it is easier to understand whether the desire is real or temporary”, advises the specialist.

3. Avoid shopping when you are emotionally vulnerable

Shopping to feel better after a stressful day is a common trap. “In these situations, the consumption it becomes an emotional anesthetic, and the relief is always temporary”, warns the psychotherapist.

4. Reflect on the purpose of the purchase

Ask yourself: “Do I want this or do I need it?” “This simple exercise brings awareness and connects the act of consumption to a more authentic meaning, and not just to impulse”, says Daniele Caetano.

5. Set a budget and stick to it-o

Setting a financial limit is a way to protect yourself from rash decisions. “Self-control doesn’t come out of nowhere — it’s built with planning and self-knowledge”, adds the psychotherapist.

Finally, Daniele Caetano reinforces that emotional awareness is the greatest antidote against impulsive consumption. “When we learn to identify what is really behind the desire to buy, we gain freedom, not only financial, but also emotional”, he concludes.
