Elegance, agility and sensitivity make him a complete dog for hunting and companionship.

Originally from Great Britain, the English pointer is one of the most traditional and admired breeds among pointing hunting dogs. Developed from the 17th century onwards, it was created to identify and “pinpoint” the location of prey with precision, remaining motionless upon sighting it until the owner approaches. This ability gave rise to the name itself: “pointer”, which means “pointer” in English.

It is recognized as a versatile hunting dog, with a strong working instinct and excellent performance in the field. Over the years, however, he has also gained ground as a companion dog, especially among owners who lead an active, outdoor lifestyle.

Next, check out some characteristics of the English pointer dog!

1. Physical appearance

The Brazilian Dog Confederation (CBKC) describes the English pointer as a dog “symmetrically well built, with a general outline with a series of graceful curves”. Its appearance conveys agility, strength and resistance — fundamental characteristics for a dog that needs to travel long distances in the field.

Its size is considered medium to large. The ideal height varies between 63 and 69 cm in males and 61 to 66 cm in females. THE coat is shortthin, smooth and shiny, with a firm touch and well distributed. The most common colors are lemon and white, orange and white, liver and white, black and white, as well as unicolor and tricolor variations.

The ears, according to CBKC, are thin, set quite high, falling close to the head. The eyes, in turn, are bright and have a sweet expression, and can be hazel or brown, depending on the color of the coat. The tail is of medium length, thick at the root and tapering towards the tip.

2. Temperament and personality

According to the CBKC, the English pointer is a dog with aristocratic behavior, with an alert appearance and a sweet expression. He stands out for being pleasant, balanced, resistant and fast, characteristics that make him not only an excellent hunting dog, but also a great companion for family life, as long as he has adequate stimuli.

The breed is known for its sensitivity and strong bond with its owner. The pointer is usually affectionate, sociable and shows a great willingness to please. Therefore, it responds well to positive training and lives amicably with people and other dogs. However, its high energy level requires frequent physical activity, which makes it more suitable for owners with an active lifestyle.

As this is an athletic dog, with a fast metabolism and great physical resistance, the English pointer’s diet must be rich in nutrients, with quality food that supports its energy and muscle mass. The ideal amount should consider the animal’s weight, age and level of daily activity.

Furthermore, the dog’s health must be monitored regularly with visits to the veterinarian, up-to-date vaccinations, parasite control and preventive exams. Although the breed is not known to present many genetic problems, as it is a large and very active dog, it is important to monitor possible signs of hip dysplasia and take care of joints with adequate exercises.

The English pointer is an intelligent, obedient breed that likes to learn. Therefore, their education tends to be calm, especially when positive reinforcement is used. Starting training and socialization while still a puppy is essential for the puppy to grow up confident, adapted to different environments and sociable with other animals and people.

Because he has high energy and a great need for movement, it is recommended that he lives in houses with a yard or that have daily tours long. Activities such as running, hiking, swimming and games of fetch are highly recommended to maintain your physical and emotional well-being.
