Prayers help relieve anxiety and prepare the body for more restorative sleep
Amid intense routines, excess information and constant stimuli, the period before bed has gained a new meaning at home. More than ending the day, this moment came to be seen as a space for emotional care, introspection and spiritual reconnection, especially through nightly prayers and reflections.
Experts in human behavior point out that the night is one of the few periods of the day when the mind allows itself to naturally slow down. Away from external demands, silence encourages inner listening, reduces anxiety and contributes to deeper, more restful sleep.
According to João Queiroz, theologian, specialist in human behavior and content manager at Hallow Brasil, the habit of to pray before bed responds to a contemporary emotional need. “The end of the day is when people finally stop. Night prayer organizes thoughts, welcomes emotions and helps transform restlessness into confidence, which directly impacts the quality of sleep and emotional well-being”, she explains.
Prayer of gratitude
Among the most common practices is the prayer of gratitude, which invites the person to revisit the day with a more compassionate outlook. By being grateful for small achievements and learning, even in the midst of challenges, the brain enters a state of greater relaxation.
Example of a prayer of gratitude: “Lord, thank you for this day that ends. Thank you for the opportunities, for the care received and for the strength that sustained me. I surrender everything I have experienced into Your hands, confident that tomorrow will be a new beginning.”
Guided reflection to calm the mind
Another common practice is guided reflection to calm the mind, especially recommended for those who suffer from racing thoughts at bedtime. Conscious breathing, combined with words of surrender, helps to reduce the tension accumulated throughout the day.
Example of guided reflection to calm the mind: “Now I rest. Everything I can’t resolve today, I surrender. My mind calms down, my heart trusts, my body relaxes.”
Evening examination of conscience
It is also common to perform a nightly examination of conscience, a brief review of the day done without guilt, but with honesty and kindness towards oneself. This exercise promotes self-knowledge and reduces feelings such as frustration and excessive self-demand.
Example: “Lord, show me where I was light and where I can grow. Forgive my failures and teach me to start over tomorrow with more love, patience and wisdom.”
Surrender Prayer
Finally, many people resort to prayer of surrender, a symbolic gesture of trust that helps create a sense of emotional security before sleep. Example: “In Your hands I place my life, my thoughts and my rest. Guard my mind, my body and my home. May my sleep be peaceful and restorative. Amen.”
How the form of prayer also influences relaxation
In addition to the content of the words, the way these prayers are said also influences relaxation. According to João Queiroz, the human voice plays a fundamental role in this process. “Listening to a prayer led by a calm voice helps regulate breathing, reduces mental agitation and creates a feeling of calm. receptionsomething essential for those who reach the end of the day emotionally tired”, he says.
Transforming the moment before bed into a ritual of silence and spirituality does not require long periods or complex formulas. Small minutes of presence, reflection and surrender are enough to promote emotional balance and prepare the body for healthier rest.
“When the night stops being just the end of the day and becomes a space of Careful interior, the impact is reflected in mood, quality of sleep and even the way the person faces the next day”, concludes the specialist.
