They serve as a simple and effective resource to transform spaces, creating more engaging atmospheres.

With the growing search for more welcoming environments with a feeling of comfort, shades of brown are once again gaining prominence in architecture and interior design. More than a trend, they reflect a change in the way we think about living, in which the home becomes a place of pause, comfort and breathing in everyday life. In this scenario, variations of brown come in as a simple and effective resource to transform spaces, creating more engaging atmospheres and an almost immediate feeling of well-being.

For architect Denise Barretto, this movement is directly linked to a search for authenticity. “There is a growing desire for environments that convey truth, that are not excessively put together. Shades of brown contribute to this because they carry a very strong feeling of naturalness”, he states.

Furthermore, the versatility of the earthy palette allows it to adapt to different languages — from classic to contemporary, from urban to rustic — always with an elegant and timeless base. “It’s a color that welcomes and, at the same time, structures the project. It can appear subtly or more strikingly, depending on the proposal”, he adds.

Quiet luxury: less excess, more essence

The rise of the so-called “quiet luxury” reinforces this more restrained and lasting look at design. Instead of focusing on flashy elements or passing trends, the proposal is to value quality materials, well-executed finishes and choices that stand the test of time.

Within this logic, shades of brown function as a link between sophistication and discretion. They don’t compete visually, but they build a solid foundation on which the rest of the project builds. In many cases, they replace gray and absolute white, providing more warmth without losing elegance.

Denise Barretto observes that this type of approach requires sensitivity in composition. “When you work with a more restrained palette, each choice gains more weight. The texture, the lighting, the finish — everything needs to be in harmony. The brown it helps precisely to create this unity”, explains the architect.

Organic aesthetics as a guiding thread

The presence of earthy tones is also directly related to the consolidation of organic aesthetics in architecture and interior design. More than a visual trend, it is an approach that seeks to reconnect the built environment with natural references, both in the choice of materials and in the sensations that the space provokes.

In this scenario, brown appears as an extension of the landscape — evoking earth, wood, fibers and raw elements. This connection contributes to creating more balanced and welcoming environments, in which the visual and the sensorial go together.

“When we bring these references into the home, we create more human spaces. It is an architecture that welcomes not only visually, but also emotionally”, highlights the architect.

Wood and woody flavors: tradition that is reinvented

Among the main ways to incorporate shades of brown in projects, madeira — in its natural or reinterpreted versions — continues as the protagonist. Present in floors, panels, joinery and furniture, it helps to warm up environments and add layers of texture.

At the same time, woody finishes expand application possibilities, offering versatile solutions compatible with different everyday needs. “Today we are able to work with materials that reproduce the aesthetics of wood very faithfully, exploring veins, nuances and patterns that enrich the project”, comments Denise Barretto.

This combination of tradition and innovation allows the use of brown to be constantly updated, interacting with different styles without losing its essence.

Between nuances and contrasts

Another essential aspect is the way the shades of brown are combined with each other. Far from monotonous compositions, the palette allows you to explore subtle contrasts and overlaps that promote visual depth.

From the lightest tones, such as beige and fendi, to the most intense, such as chocolate and coffee, the variation contributes to environments more dynamic, even within the same color family. “Balance is fundamental. Aligning different shades within brown brings richness without weight”, says the architect.

Furthermore, the color easily relates to other materials such as natural stones, matte finish metals and natural fiber fabrics, expanding the composition possibilities.

A new look at living

More than an aesthetic choice, the appreciation of shades of brown reflects a change in behavior. In a scenario where excess loses space to the essential, architecture starts to prioritize experiences that are more authentic, lasting and connected to well-being.

“It’s not just about color, but the feeling that the space conveys. Brown has the ability to make environments more welcoming and timeless, without depending on passing trends”, concludes Denise Barretto.
