The schipperke is a breed originating from Belgium with roots dating back to the 17th century. According to the Brazilian Cinophilia Confederation (CBKC), the name means “little shepherd”, which reveals its connection with ancient shepherd dogs from the region, especially the leuvenaar, considered its direct ancestor. Despite its initial function linked to herding, it gained prominence in cities, mainly in Brussels, where it was used by workers to protect properties and control pests, such as rats and mice.

According to CBKC, the breed’s popularity grew rapidly after its presentation at exhibitions in the 19th century, becoming a dog admired by Belgian royalty. This combination of efficient guard dog, hunter of small animals and faithful companion helped to consolidate the schipperke as a versatile breed, which maintains its original characteristics of alertness, agility and independence to this day.

1. Physical appearance

The schipperke is a small dogbut with a solid and well-balanced structure. According to CBKC, it has a short and wide body, with proportions that form an almost square appearance. Its weight varies between 3 and 9 kg, and it is common to find specimens weighing between 4 and 7 kg.

It has a relatively short snout and small, dark, expressive eyes. The ears are erect, triangular and extremely mobile, reinforcing its always alert posture. Some dogs are born completely without a tail, with a rudimentary or incomplete one.

Another striking point is the coat: abundant, dense and always black, with a firm texture and the presence of a thick undercoat, which offers protection against climate variations. According to CBKC, this coat forms a mane around the neck, in addition to fringes on the thighs and posterior region.

2. Temperament and personality

The schipperke is recognized for its active and vigilant behavior. According to CBKC, this is an excellent watchdogwith constant attention and great sensitivity to movements around them. This characteristic means that it is always on alert, reacting quickly to any unusual situation.

Furthermore, it is a very curious and investigative dog, with a strong hunting instinct for small animals, a legacy of its historical role in rodent control. Although he may show some distrust towards strangers, he is docile with children and very attached to his family.

His high energy and need for stimulation mean he is almost always on the move, exploring the environment. Therefore, it needs daily play and exercise to avoid becoming impatient.

As an active dog with a fast metabolism, the schipperke needs a balanced diet suitable for its size. It is important to choose quality feed, respecting the indicated quantities to avoid overweightas body balance is important to maintain your agility.

The breed has a double coat — with a soft, dense undercoat and a more resistant outer layer — which requires regular care, such as frequent brushing to avoid the accumulation of dead hair and maintain the skin’s natural protection. Furthermore, periodic veterinary consultations, vaccinations and parasite control are essential to preserving the animal’s general health.
