Maintaining a healthy routine and investing in daily care can help preserve skin’s elasticity and appearance for longer.
The appearance of expression wrinkles is not always linked to more advanced signs of aging. In addition to chronological age, factors such as emotional state and even everyday habits can directly influence the appearance of more pronounced lines on the face.
“There is a well-established relationship between stress, anxiety and the emergence of expression wrinkles. Stress leads to repetitive and involuntary contraction of facial muscles, especially in regions linked to emotions. Over time, these constant contractions transform dynamic wrinkles into static marks”, explains dermatologist Julian Fraga.
According to the doctor, in addition to the mechanical factor, there is also an important biochemical impact of the emotional state on the appearance of wrinkles. “Chronic stress increases the release of cortisol, which contributes to the degradation of collagen and elastin, accelerating skin aging”, he adds.
When Temporary Lines Become Permanent
The most affected regions are testathe glabella (between the eyebrows) and the periorbital region. “These are areas that are extremely activated by expressions such as worry, concentration and irritation. The frontal and corrugator muscles are in constant use, which favors the early formation of lines”, details Julian Fraga.
Initially, these marks appear as dynamic lines, visible only during muscle contraction. However, they can become permanent. “With continual repetition and loss of elasticity of the skin, these lines become visible even at rest. This process can happen in a few years, especially when associated with chronic stress, sun exposure and genetic predisposition”, he states.
Daily habits that promote wrinkles
The dermatologist draws attention to the increase in cases in young patients. “It is increasingly common to see people under 30 with expression wrinkles. Anxiety, facial muscle hyperactivity and repetitive and unconscious habits are important factors in this scenario”, he says.
Daily habits that contribute to the problem include excessive use of screens, sleep deprivation and so-called repetitive facial postures. “Frowning when focusing, contracting the area between the eyebrows in moments of worry, pursing your lips, tensing your jaw or squinting your eyes are movements that, when repeated throughout the day, form microfolds in the skin that tend to stick,” he explains.
Other factors, such as smoking, sun exposure and even posture when using the cell phonealso worsen the condition, both due to the mechanical impact and the worsening of skin quality.
How to prevent and treat expression wrinkles
To prevent expression wrinkles, Julian Fraga reinforces a multifactorial approach: “Daily photoprotection is essential to preserve collagen. In addition, stress control, physical activity, adequate sleep and awareness of habits facials make a lot of difference. Dermocosmetics with antioxidants and retinoids also help”, he advises.
In cases where marks begin to become visible, medical evaluation is essential. “Botulinum toxin remains the gold standard for expression wrinkles, as it reduces muscle contraction. We can combine lasers for texture and collagen stimulation, bio-stimulators for firmness and, in some cases, fillers with hyaluronic acid”, he states.
Finally, he highlights the importance of not just treating the symptom. “The best results come when we combine aesthetic treatment with re-education of habits and control of emotional factors. It’s not just about wrinkles, it’s about behavior and skin health as a whole”, he concludes.
