According to the study “Historical Patterns and Sustainability Implications of Worldwide Bicycle Ownership and Use“, published in the magazine Communications Earth & Environment, approximately 414 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) could stop being emitted annually if everyone cycled about 1.6 kilometers per day.

The researchers further estimate that this reduction could reach 686 million metric tons per year if the pattern of bicycle use observed in the Netherlands — with an average of 2.6 kilometers cycled daily per person — were adopted globally.

To this end, elderly cyclists and non-cyclists answered demographic questionnaires, used accelerometers for three weeks and performed balance tests on force platforms.

The results showed that “cyclists, compared to non-cyclists, showed differences in balance-related temporospatial metrics and long-range temporal correlations that suggest a more rigorous postural control strategy, possibly related to greater stability.” The study also noted that cycling had a stronger correlation with balance outcomes than other forms of physical activity.

Taking part in bicycle tours or cycling groups is an excellent way to expand social interaction and create new connections.
