Alexandre Pimenta points out that the way the problems digestive manifests itself can also vary according to the age group. In children, for example, it is common to complain about diffuse abdominal pain, irritability and changes in appetite.

In the elderly, symptoms may be quieter or confusing, with the occurrence of weakness, disorientation or mental confusion and reduction of perceived pain. “The presence of comorbidities in the elderly can still mask the symptoms; so it is important to regular medical follow -up in this age group,” comments the professional.

Causes two digestive problems

Among the factors that can contribute to the imbalance of the digestive system, the doctor highlights the five most common:

  1. Inadequate feeding, with high fat intake, sugars and ultra -processed foods;
  2. Physical inactivity;
  3. Chronic stress;
  4. Excessive alcohol consumption;
  5. Smoking.

According to Alexandre Pimenta, these habits directly affect intestinal motility, the production of digestive enzymes and the intestinal microbiota.

Be aware of the family history

Some diseases of digestive systemsuch as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, have autoimmune origin and may have genetic predisposition. “It is important for individuals with a family history of these diseases to be aware of symptoms such as chronic abdominal pain, stool blood and weight loss,” says the doctor.

These conditions are part of the group of inflammatory intestinal diseases (DII), which are highlighted this month with the May Purple Campaign, dedicated to awareness and encouraging early diagnosis.

Keeping the digestive system healthy

According to Alexandre Pimenta, the good news is that it is possible to prevent many of the digestive problems with simple and consistent habits. For this, the doctor recommends:

  • Keep one diet balanced, with fruits, vegetables and fibers;
  • Chew food well and eat slowly;
  • Practice exercise regularly;
  • Drink plenty of water;
  • Reduce stress and sleep well;
  • Include in the routine foods with probiotics such as yogurts and kefir.

“These habits improve digestion, help regulate intestinal flora and contribute to the proper functioning of the body as a whole,” says the professional.

In addition, it is also important to avoid certain foods and habits in the routine to keep the digestive system healthy, such as:

  • Ultra -processed foods, rich in trans fat and sugars;
  • Heavy meals at night;
  • Gasified drinks and excess caffeine;
  • Eat in stress or hasty situations;
  • The abusive consumption of alcohol and tobacco.

When to see a doctor

Alexandre Pimenta warns that in any persistent sign of digestive change, the ideal is to seek medical evaluation. Examinations such as endoscopy, colonoscopy and laboratory are common to investigate symptoms and ensure early diagnosis. “The frequency of check-ups Digestive health varies according to family history and risk factors, but in general, it is recommended that adults make evaluations every five to 10 years, ”concludes the doctor.
