Profile brings together mature individuals who maintain an active life, encourage bonds and expand social participation

The term NOLT, acronym for New Older Living Trendbecame part of international debates on longevity and active aging policies. The concept describes people aged 60 and over who experience maturity with autonomy, vitality, strong bonds and continuous projects. This group gains attention for adopting constant movement, structured routine and active participation in cultural, social and educational environments.

Analyzes of population behavior and health show growth in mature individuals who prioritize intellectual stimulation, social interaction and consistent planning of their own time. This trend accompanies demographic transformations in several countries and reinforces the need to understand contemporary ways of experiencing adulthood.

For psychologist Cristiane Pertusi, president of the Brazilian Association of Family Therapy (ABRATEF), the NOLT generation represents a profound reorganization of the aging. “Mature people are structuring their routine clearly, they seek environments that expand their repertoire and develop new projects with autonomy. This attitude sustains vitality and strengthens bonds”, he states.

Core Features of NOLTs

NOLT (New Older Living Trend) is a term that appears in international behavioral studies, especially in countries facing accelerated population aging. Japan, South Korea, Italy, the United States and the United Kingdom identify the growing presence of mature adults in training spaces, cultural practices, community movements and physical activities.

Some characteristics define the behavior of this generation and explain why it stands out in debates about longevity and active aging. See the main ones:

1. Active routine as a health strategy

Regular movement practice, attention to sleep, food balanced and self-care are part of everyday life. These habits serve as pillars of physical and emotional stability.

2. Permanent search for knowledge

Courses, reading, travel, technology and cultural participation stimulate the brain and expand social networks, reducing the risk of isolation.

Regular meetings, volunteer work, community groups and collective activities strengthen bonds and improve emotional health indicators.

4. Consistent planning

Financial organization, travel goals, self-care schedules and personal projects support a sense of direction and promote emotional security.

5. Continuity of projects and links

Maturity integrates past and future. Studies, hobbiessocial networks and long-term goals remain active and generate belonging.

Why is this generation at the center of global debates?

International health organizations highlight the impact of aging on the structure of cities, the health system, the job market and family relationships. The NOLT generation draws attention because it demonstrates viable paths for active aging, with a lower risk of cognitive decline and greater social integration.

Cristiane Pertusi observes that this attitude transforms the cultural understanding of maturity. “Vitality appears when there is intention. Movement, connections and intellectual stimulation create support for autonomy and long-term well-being”, he comments.

Impact on family and social relationships

The active presence of mature people changes family dynamics. There is more participation in decisions, exchange of experiences, intergenerational coexistence and construction of shared projects. This posture reduces tensions and favors more stable emotional environments.

In social spaces, NOLTs expand circulation in cultural centers, parks, open universities, events and sporting practices. This movement promotes emotional health and strengthens support networks.

Movement expresses maturity with purpose. NOLT people organize their own time, build new chapters of life and occupy social spaces with autonomy.

According to Cristiane Pertusi, this behavior represents a clear way of living the present future. “There is energy, intention and perspective. maturity current includes projects, links and active participation in the world”, he states.
