Small actions behind the wheel can make a big difference in the safety of drivers, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists. In May, a month marked by the Yellow May movement, which draws attention to the prevention of accidents and the preservation of lives in traffic, adopting safer driving habits is a way of reducing risks and contributing to more responsible roads.

“Driving safely does not just depend on knowing the traffic rules. It also involves attention, predictability and conscious choices throughout the entire route. Often, reducing speed, maintaining adequate distance and avoiding distractions are enough to considerably reduce the chance of accidents”, says Felipe Genovesi, automotive insurance specialist and commercial head at Justos.

Below, Felipe Genovesi lists practical tips for safer driving!

1. Respect speed limits

Speed is one of the most relevant factors in the severity of accidents. Even small reductions can increase the driver’s reaction time and lessen the impact in case of collision. In addition to respecting the signage, it is important to adapt the speed to the conditions of the road, the weather and the flow of vehicles.

2. Avoid using your cell phone while driving

Using your cell phone while driving compromises visual, manual and cognitive attention. Even a quick glance to respond to a message can be enough for the driver to miss a sudden brake, a pedestrian crossing or an unexpected change in traffic.

3. Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front

Driving too close to car from the front reduces response time in unexpected situations. Maintaining an adequate distance allows you to brake more safely and avoids rear-end collisions, especially on busy roads, on rainy, foggy or wet days.

4. Avoid sudden acceleration and braking

In addition to increasing vehicle wear and fuel consumption, sudden accelerations and braking indicate less predictable driving. Smoother driving helps the driver anticipate risks and makes traffic safer for everyone.

5. Pay extra attention when turning and changing lanes

Curves must be made at a compatible speed and pay attention to the road layout. In the changes lane control, correct use of the turn signal and checking mirrors and blind spots are essential to avoid blind spots and side collisions.

6. Check mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes

Even with the use of the turn signal, it is important to check mirrors and blind spots before any maneuver. Motorcyclists and cyclists may be in areas of low visibility, especially in corridors or on the sides of the road.

7. Plan your route before leaving

Checking the route in advance helps to avoid sudden decisions in trafficsuch as last-minute conversions or sudden lane changes. It is also worth considering busy times and possible adverse conditions, such as rain, fog or low visibility.

8. Take care of vehicle maintenance

Inflated tires, brakes in good condition, working lights and up-to-date maintenance are essential for safe driving. Traffic safety also depends on the condition of the car, not just the driver’s behavior.

“When drivers better understand their own habits, they have more control over the way they drive. This generates individual benefits, such as greater safety and savings, but also a collective impact, because it contributes to less aggressive and more predictable traffic”, adds Felipe Genovesi.
