The Biwer Terrier is a relatively recent breed when compared to more traditional ones, but its history draws attention precisely because of its unusual origin. According to the official standard of the Brazilian Cinophilia Confederation (CBKC), it appeared in Germany in the early 1980s, when a tricolor puppy different from the others was born in a litter of Yorkshire terriers.

The dog aroused the interest of breeders Werner and Gertrude Biewer, who began a selective program to develop and stabilize these unique physical characteristics.
