There are cat breeds spread across different parts of the world, and many of them carry not only striking physical characteristics, but also a deep history linked to the culture of their countries of origin. Thailand is a good example of this. The Asian country, once known as Siam, gave rise to some of the most famous feline breeds on the planet and helped shape the relationship between humans and cats over the centuries.

In Thai culture, cats have long been seen as special animals, associated with luck, prosperity and even spiritual protection. Many of them appear in the Tamra Maew, an ancient manuscript known as the “Book of Poems of Cats,” which describes felines considered auspicious in the ancient kingdom of Zion. Some were bred in palaces, given as noble gifts, and valued for their beauty and temperament.

1. Siamese

For a long time, these cats were not sold, but were given as gifts on special occasions, such as weddings.

This is a small to medium sized cat. The coat is short, close to the body and has a blue-gray color with silver tips, which creates a characteristic shine. Another striking detail is the shape of the face, which resembles a heart, in addition to the large, expressive eyes, normally in shades of bright green when the animal is already an adult. At home, he is usually affectionate, attentive and very attached to his family.

3. Khao Manee

O khao manee It is a rare and highly valued breed, known in Thailand for centuries. Its name can be translated as something close to “white gem”, a direct reference to its light coat and the brightness of its eyes. There are reports that these cats lived linked to Thai royalty and were seen as animals of luck and prestige.

4. Thai

The Thai cat is considered the most traditional version of the ancient Siamese cat, preserving characteristics closer to the original Thai felines before the aesthetic transformations made in breeding programs in the West. In its country of origin, it is related to the wichien maat, one of the cats described in the Tamra Maew and one of the most important in Thai feline tradition.

Physically, the Thai resembles the Siamese, but with more moderate features. The body is medium-sized, muscular and elegant. Blue eyes continue to be a very striking feature. The coat is short, fine and silky, usually also in a pattern colourpoint. In terms of behavior, it is an affectionate, intelligent cat and very connected to its owner.

5. Suphalak

Suphalak is one of the breeds rarer and less known to the general public, although they have enormous historical value. It also appears in traditional cat records from ancient Siam and is therefore part of the group of felines considered native to Thailand.

This is a medium-sized cat. The coat is short, smooth and has a warm reddish-brown tone. This uniform appearance of the color is one of the main points that distinguish the breed. The eyes are often gold or amber. In terms of personality, it tends to be an intelligent, curious cat and very attached to the people it lives with.
