Doctor highlights the importance of looking beyond the scale and combining different strategies to maintain health and achieve lasting results

Popularly known as “slimming pens”, GLP-1 analogue medications have gained ground in the treatment of obesity and overweight as they promote significant weight loss in many patients. However, during weight loss, part of the weight lost may correspond to muscle mass, especially when treatment is not accompanied by adequate nutrition and regular physical activity.
“When weight loss occurs quickly or without adequate nutritional and physical support, there is a risk of loss of lean mass. This can reduce energy expenditure and make it difficult to maintain weight in the long term”, says Dr. Patrick Ferreira, president of the Brazilian Academy of Clinical Medicine and specialist in Nutrology, Sports Medicine, Exercise Physiology and Obesity.
Below, he explains what care is essential to lose weight while preserving muscle. Check it out!
1. Losing weight goes far beyond the number on the scale
Reducing body weight is just one indicator of the success of treatment with GLP-1 analogue medications. “The goal of treatment is not just to reduce the weightbut improve body composition. This means losing fat and preserving or even increasing muscle mass, which is essential for metabolism and general health”, explains the doctor.
2. Pay special attention to protein consumption
Food plays a decisive role in preserving the musculature. According to Dr. Patrick Ferreira, adequate protein intake is essential to provide the amino acids necessary for muscle maintenance and reconstruction, as, in the absence of these nutrients, the body can use muscle tissue as a source of energy.
3. Include strength exercises in your routine
Obesity treatment should not be based solely on the use of medication. “Resistance exercise, such as weight training, is one of the main stimuli for preserving and even increasing muscle mass during weight loss. It should be an obligatory part of the treatment”, says the specialist.
4. Avoid seeking quick results at any cost
Although the accelerated weight loss is often celebrated, losing weight too quickly can harm metabolic functioning. “Losing weight too quickly increases the chance of losing muscle mass and can compromise metabolism. The ideal is to seek a progressive and sustainable process”, highlights Dr. Patrick Ferreira.
5. Undergo medical supervision throughout the treatment
The use of weight loss pens requires continuous monitoring to assess clinical progress, adjust medication and adapt nutritional and physical activity strategies according to each patient’s response. According to the doctor, with professional supervision, it is possible to individualize the treatment and avoid excessive loss of muscle mass, with integrated adjustments to diet, physical activity and medication.
6. Prioritize health and quality of life, not just aesthetics
The real success of treatment is improving metabolic health, strength and functional capacity. Preserving muscle mass means investing in autonomy, strength, disease prevention and healthy aging. “The treatment of obesity must always aim for sustainable results, and not just aesthetic ones”, he states.
Healthy weight loss requires a complete approach
According to Dr. Patrick Ferreira, weight loss pens represent an important advance in the fight against obesity, but their best results are achieved when they are part of a complete approach. A balanced diet, physical exercise, medical monitoring and a focus on body composition are the pillars for healthy, sustainable weight loss capable of promoting lasting health benefits.
