Children’s swimming goes beyond a recreational or physical conditioning activity. When properly inserted into children’s routines, it becomes a complete development tool, contributing to physical, emotional and social aspects from the first years of life. To better understand these benefits, we spoke with Bodytech’s Acqua and Kids Master Trainer, Michelle Stracke.

Physical and motor development from the earliest years

Swimming is one of the most complete activities for child development, as it stimulates the body completely. In the water, the child has more freedom to explore movements, which favors motor learning.

According to Michelle Stracke, “swimming promotes the integral development of the baby and child, combining movement, affection and safety in a harmonious way”. She explains that, in this environment, little ones can develop global and fine motor coordination, balance, strength and flexibility naturally.

Furthermore, water reduces the impact and expands the possibilities of movement, allowing a progressive evolution from reflex to voluntary control, which strengthens neuropsychomotor development and body awareness.

When to start and what are the precautions?

A child’s introduction to swimming can happen in the first few months of life, as long as the appropriate guidelines and stage of development are respected. At Bodytech, classes start from 6 months.

According to the expert, the most important thing in this process is to respect the child’s time and create a positive relationship with water. “The focus is not to accelerate results, but to build a safe and pleasurable experience, without pressure or practices that can generate fear”, highlights Michelle.

It also reinforces the importance of prepared environments, qualified professionals and family participation, which acts as emotional support and strengthens the emotional bond, especially in the early years.

In addition to the physical benefits, swimming plays an important role in children’s emotional and social development. The class environment favors interaction and collective learning. Among the main benefits are:

  • Encouragement of socialization with other children;
  • Development of autonomy and creativity;
  • Strengthening self-esteem;
  • Building self-confidence.

Master Trainer Acqua e Kids from Bodytech highlights that a welcoming environment is important in this process. “Playful activities, with music, games and age-appropriate challenges, create a space in which children feel safe to explore, make mistakes and try again”, he explains.

Benefits of swimming

The benefits of swimming accompany children at different stages of life. The practice contributes to the development of healthy habits, improved sleep, emotional regulation and strengthening the cardiorespiratory system.

In this context, children who grow up in contact with water develop a solid motor base, which favors other physical and sporting activities. This process also stimulates skills such as discipline, autonomy, resilience and confidence, reflecting positively on school performance, social relationships and personal development over time.
